We’re finally here!
It’s the last day of the fantastic Creative Christmas challenge! The wonderful Kim over at Later Levels set a challenge to answer questions and prompts every day over the Christmas and New Year period, and it was all about games!
Today’s question: You wake up the following morning, hungover but happy – you have an entire day of gaming ahead of you. You start thinking back over the video games you played during 2017; what was your game of the year?
This prompt was actually so difficult that I seriously considered not answering today’s question. But I’ve enjoyed taking part in Creative Christmas so much that I simply couldn’t not take part in the final day!
Why do I find it so difficult to name my favourite game of the year? I don’t really play new releases.
I could say that Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was my favourite game because it definitely looks right up my alley, and I’m really impressed with how responsibly Ninja Theory handled a sensitive topic.
But I didn’t get around to playing it…
I could say that Persona 5 or Yakuza Zero was my favourite game because I loved playing them and existing in different areas of Japan that I haven’t been able to visit in real life. Plus minigames! ALL OF THE MINIGAMES!
But, I don’t feel as strongly about either as I think I should feel about my game of the year…
Ultimately, it comes down to a game that, although it was released in 2015, I only started playing in 2017. It’s the conclusion of a series I totally fell in love with last year. I’ve written lovingly about the first and second instalments already on this blog and mentioned multiple times that once I started playing this games, I’ve been unable to pick up anything else. It may not be eligible for Game of the Year, but it’s certainly the game of MY year, and it’s Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.
