A Collection of What-I’ve-Been-Doing

After mentioning on Fistful of Glitter a couple of times before, I figured some of you might like to read some of my work from elsewhere on the internet. Most of it is for a wonderful gaming website called “The Gamers Lounge” which I highly recommend having a look at. At the moment, this is where most of my energy is going, but I’m hoping to start writing here again in the next couple of weeks. In the meanwhile, you can find me at Gamers Lounge or elsewhere (links below).

Morgan at The Gamers Lounge

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine Review – One of my favourite things I have reviewed this year, and incredibly underrated as it turns out. If you read only one thing from the reviews and articles I have written for Gamers Lounge, make it this.

Light Fall Review – Despite not particularly liking the game, this review definitely inspired some of the stuff I’m wanting to start writing about, both here and elsewhere on the internet. Writing this review was quite difficult in many ways, as I felt very restricted by the review format, so expect to hear more about it (and other Kickstarted games) on Fistful of Glitter

Moonlighter Review – Some of the most fun I’ve had writing a review, as well as the first review I’ve ever written with someone else.

My Gamers Lounge Profile – If you want to go all out and read everything I’ve written for The Gamers Lounge, you can do so here.

Morgan Elsewhere on the Internet

10 Terrible Movies We Love Anyway (for Taste of Cinema) – A really fun article to write, and one that I’m quite proud of, not only because it’s quite funny but because I managed to sit through the entirety of Showgirls while writing it.

Morgan’s Interview Feature (my interview by the brilliant J.E Skye at Bipolar Writer) – An interview J.E Skye did with me about my experience of mental illness. It’s still one of the things I’m most proud of being part of.

I’m planning on adding more to this list as I get more freelance work, so stay tuned.

Where have you been?

Oh my gosh! I have 99 followers! That’s amazing! It’s particularly amazing because I haven’t actually updated my blog since the beginning of the year. I’ve figured that the wonderful friends I’ve made on WordPress, my followers and probably anyone who looks at my blog are owed an explanation, but I’ve been putting off writing one for a while. It’s something that I still struggle to talk about in general, but it is important to let you all know what’s going on.

As some of you know, at the end of last year, I was feeling particularly sick. My muscles were almost always in some form of pain and I rarely had much energy. After the new year, my symptoms became much worse. Worse than anything I had experienced with my chronic illness. I stopped seeing friends almost entirely and I stopped writing on the blog. I was just too sick.

I went to the doctor and he ran a very basic test for a condition called Fibromyalgia, which is a condition that causes nerve pain, exhaustion and a whole slew of other symptoms. I was told I’m highly likely to have this condition (although not 100% confirmed, I’m currently in the process of having it diagnosed properly).

What does that mean for me?

Right now, it means that everything is a struggle as I try to find a new way of doing basic things like cooking dinner, keeping the house vaguely clean and exercising. It means simplifying what I’m doing as much as possible. It also means that I can’t take the medication that keeps my endometriosis under control while I’m in the process of being diagnosed so I’m pretty sick most of the time. Ultimately, I have to prioritise everything I do, including my writing. At the moment, the freelance work I do comes first as that’s what pays my bills. This brings us to:

What does that mean for Fistful of Glitter?

So far this year, it has meant the blog has been totally inactive. I would like to change that. I miss the lovely community here, and I miss writing on my blog. I am going to try and update it as I have things to write about and the energy to write about them but it won’t be the same regular Tuesday and Thursday updates as before. I’m not sure what will replace them, but I hope you are willing to stay tuned and find out.

Thank you all for supporting me, and Fistful of Glitter. With a bit of luck, I’ll have new content for you here soon.

– Morgan

I started this blog as a way of sharing the things I loved during a very tough time in my life. While that time isn’t entirely over, things have certainly got better, and a huge part of that has been my blog and the positive response I’ve received to it.

Initially, I thought I’d be lucky to make it to ten followers, and I’ve ended the year with almost seventy, and that’s not even mentioning all the supportive messages and wonderful posts I’ve got to read. To anyone who has followed this blog, commented on it, liked it, shared it or read it, I am incredibly grateful that you’ve taken the time to read my writing.

I wish you all a very happy New Year, and the best for 2018. May you play all the games you want to, consume the very best stories, and have the best year so far.

Weekend Breakfast 23/12/17 (and why I’ve been semi-away)

Hi all,

It’s been a crazy week, what with being in the apartment just me and the cat and preparing for Christmas. It’s a bit of a long post this week, so please bear with me as we share this weekend breakfast and chat about what’s been happening this week.

In life…

To get the more difficult stuff out of the way first, many of you will have noticed that two of my regular series (Kickass TV Heroines and my one of specials on movies and games) haven’t been appearing regularly in recent weeks. I wanted to wait until I had a proper explanation to talk about it, but it looks like that won’t happen at least until mid-January so I want to take the time to explain what I can now.

As many of you know, I have a chronic illness (for more background, have a look here), but recently it’s been getting much worse. This week has been one of the worst weeks in terms of my health for a very long time. My body struggles to absorb iron, and recently it’s stopped absorbing it properly from food. I’m also unable to take iron supplements or, as I recently found out, intravenous iron injections. Lack of iron means a lack of energy, and boy! have I been feeling that recently. One day last week I was even unable to get out of bed for most of the day! I’m having to adjust to having a very different energy pattern to what I’m used to as my symptoms get worse. I will still try and update my ongoing series as I can, but it’s quite difficult to write the longer forms that I try to do for them at the moment. Luckily I have a couple of guest writers to cover the next couple of weeks of Kickass TV Heroines, and I’m hoping to finish off my two requested posts and have them up early in the new year.

Enough talking about being ill! Other than that this week has been all about the Christmas prep (and cleaning the house for our upcoming inspection). That means lots of shopping for yummy food, looking at cooking ideas, planning things with my mum, and buying presents! It’s my other half’s birthday today, and to distract myself from the fact that we’re spending it apart (boo), I’m throwing myself a mini-Christmas. Christmas movies, wrapping presents and mimosas! Yay!

In gaming…

To absolutely no one’s surprise, I’ve continued to play the Witcher 3 this week. As I’ve been saying every week, it’s pretty damn amazing. It might have actually made its way into my top three favourite games! I’m playing the section in Skellige at the moment and I keep having to stop to admire the beautiful landscape and music. It’s one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had playing a game.

In watching…

I feel like I have watched so much this week! I’ve watched a bunch of The Punisher (yes, there will be a discussion of it up at some point), a little bit of The Crown, and a lot of The Flash. I’ve actually really enjoyed everything I’ve been watching, but The Flash stood out this week for me. It might be because I’m going through a bit of my own darkness with my illness, but watching a superhero show that is predominantly light, fluffy and happy was just great. The Flash actually feels different from a lot of superhero things in that regard. It doesn’t seem to really take itself seriously, and that’s pretty damn wonderful.

Finally, I will be around(ish) as part of Creative Christmas, but I may be offline a bit more in the next few days as I want to spend time with my lovely Mum over Christmas. I wish you all the very best over the next few days. I know Christmas can be a lonely or difficult time for some, but I hope you all find some light somewhere.

As always, I would love to hear what you all have been up to this week? Watch anything interesting? Play something new? Or is it all just hectic Christmas preparations? Let me know in the comments!

Kickass TV Heroines: Who next?

As some of you may have noticed, there was no Kickass TV Heroines post up yesterday. That’s because I’m actually moving house right now and trying to write with an exhausted brain after moving was not producing results that anyone would have wanted to read, including me! Luckily, I’m writing a new post at the moment and it should be up over the weekend, as well as a guest post from the fantastically talented J. E. Skye of The Bipolar Writer.

Speaking of the Kickass TV Heroines series, I have two more characters lined up before it goes over to my wonderful readers to pick the final two characters for me to profile for the series. If there is a kickass female television character you would like to read a profile on, please don’t hesitate, ask away. Let me know in the comments below, Twitter or Facebook who I should be writing about.

Why no Thursday post?

Some of you may have noticed that my usual Thursday post isn’t up yet. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be up today. I’m hoping that it and a wrap-up post on the Australian Marriage Equality  Survey will be up over the weekend, but I can’t be absolutely sure as I am pretty sick. I have a chronic illness and at the moment it’s going through a pretty extreme flare up, and the pain in my muscles is pretty bad. Sitting up hurts, and therefore so does writing. I’m hoping it will calm down in a few days, but until then: no posts. Sorry!!!

Technical Difficulties!!!

Yesterday I was meant to post up a Gaming Flashback blog on the fantastic-ness that is Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, a game that is very close to my heart being the first RPG I ever played. Unfortunately due to feeling a little under the weather this week, it was going to be up a little late (read that in the early hours of this morning). Unfortunately when I went to open my draft it was TOTALLY DELETED! Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Normally I try and post every Tuesday and Thursday, but looks like there will be nothing for the Tuesday post this week. That’ll teach me to back up my blogs more carefully! ARGH!!! Thursday’s post (next installment in my Defenders series) should be up as normal, providing there are no more technical difficulties.
